Why did you decide to record solo jazz guitar and why hymns?
I decided to put all my passions into one project this time. Simply put, it was because of my love for the hymns, a love for “chord melody” solo guitar and a love for jazz.
How did you get such a clean noiseless recording?
I would attribute much of the noiselessness (lack of string zing) to the flatwound strings used on this project.
What is the difference between flatwound strings verses roundwound strings, which do you prefer?
I prefer to use flatwound strings for “chord melody” solo jazz guitar because they give me that big fat warm and mellow jazz tone. I used the D’Addario Chromes ECG25 on my archtop guitar used on my Jazz Guitar Hymns CD in order to get that rich rounded Joe Pass bass tone on the walking bass lines, without the overtones or finger noise when sliding fret to fret. But for jamming rock guitar tone like Joe Satriani or for bluesy blues tone like Stevie Ray Vaughan I usually prefer the sustain of the GHS nickel roundwounds.
What guitar did you use?
I used the Stromberg Montreux Custom archtop guitar, which is a great jazz guitar for the money.
How did you get your guitar tone on your recording?
The Stromberg Montreux Custom has a Kent Armstrong humbucker as a floating pickup off of the pick guard, I also added K&K Sound’s Pure Archtop twin-head transducer. I put both of these through the Presonus Blue Tube preamp.
What recording equipment do you use?
I used Tascam’s mx2424 and mixed down to Steinberg Wavelab. I then took the end product to Acoustik Musik in Oberlin Ohio for the mastering.
Who are some of your musical influences?
For Guitar (there are so many) - everyone from Phil Keaggy, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, Charlie Christian, Martin Taylor, Wes Montgomery, Herb Ellis, django reinhardt... but I will always be a Joe Pass wanna-be! Joe Pass is my all time favorite and biggest influence! (I’m even losing my hair in his honor! :-)
There are so many others, Stephane Grappelli (jazz violin), Oscar Peterson, Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Buddy Rich, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and many more…
How did you come up with your CD cover design?
Although the concept was mine, I couldn’t have pulled it off without the photographer Robert J. Wynne of WynningImages.com and the incredible graphics design work of Warren Kramer of WarrenKramer.com and of course a local costume shop!
